A confident dog isn’t born. It’s made, through lots of small, positive experiences. The payoff is an easygoing companion who takes the world in stride.
Start in the puppy window (3–14 weeks)
This is the golden period. Gently introduce different people, friendly vaccinated dogs, sounds, surfaces, and handling, always paired with treats, kept short, and ended on a good note.
Adopted an adult? It’s not too late
Adult dogs absolutely keep learning. Go slower, respect their pace, and let new experiences build at a comfortable distance before moving closer.
Avoid these common mistakes
- Flooding: forcing too much, too fast, which backfires into fear
- Skipping a vet-cleared puppy class once vaccinations allow
- Ignoring stress signals like lip-licking, yawning, or a tucked tail
If your dog is fearful or reactive, let us rule out pain first. Then we can point you to a trainer who uses reward-based methods.
