Pet Safety

Toxic Plants & Household Dangers

A surprising number of everyday plants, foods, medications, and chemicals can make a pet very sick, or even worse. Use this guide to pet-proof your home and yard, and keep our number close.

Suspected poisoning? Don’t wait. Call us at 928-753-6138, or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888) 426-4435. Acting fast can save your pet’s life.

Garden plants & bulbs to watch

Take extra care with these common landscape and garden plants:

Tulip bulbs
Daffodils & narcissus

Azalea & rhododendron
Yew
Foxglove
Cacao plants & mulch
Tomato & potato plants
Rhubarb
Lilies (especially toxic to cats)
Onion, garlic, chives & leeks

Use caution, too, with organic, bone-meal, blood-meal, and fish-based fertilizers and mulches.

Medications

Never give human medicine without veterinary guidance. The most dangerous include:

Tylenol (acetaminophen), deadly to cats
Aspirin in high doses
Aleve (naproxen), toxic in tiny amounts
Fleet enemas in cats
Many human prescriptions

Household chemicals

Rat poison
Snail bait
Antifreeze (ethylene glycol)
Pesticides
Fertilizers
Flea dips & sprays
Gasoline
Walnut husks
Detergents & disinfectants

One more thing: keep pets away from the compost pile, since decomposing material can grow molds and bacteria that make animals seriously ill.

When in doubt about a plant, food, or substance, it’s always safest to call. Reach us at 928-753-6138 for all your veterinary needs.
